German Education System & Types of Universities

German Education System & Types of Universities

Time and again, Germany has proven to be among the top when it comes to quality of education & living.

Education Structure in Germany

Europe has always been on everyone’s bucket list when it comes to travel as well as when it comes to bigger life decisions like higher education or migration. Do you dream of a successful life abroad? The easiest way to achieve that dream is by pursuing an education from a foreign university. Today, after careful consideration, the country that comes up as the best place to get higher education from, is none other than Germany. Time and again, Germany has proven to be among the top when it comes to quality of living. Driven by a hunger for perfection, they have managed to excel in governance and leadership. Since 2014, tuition is free for international students at almost all universities. There are government and non-government scholarships available along with flexible payment plans for the courses that do have a tuition fee. As a country, Germany checks everything off your list; standard of living, safety, health benefits, exceptional public transport, student benefits and an unending list of recreationalactivities. Additionally, Germany has the ICE (InterCity Express), a high-speed train service that runs through the country allowing you to visit all the beautiful cities in Germany that you’d like, conveniently and swiftly. If that’s not enough, the ICE has an international schedule as well with connections to Denmark, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands.

1. Primary and Secondary Levels

If we look at the German education system, it has 13 years (10+3) of primary and secondary school. At the secondary level, after the 10th grade, students of the Gymnasium schools continue studying there for the next 3 years and complete their Abitur, which then allows them to pursue their higher education at Universities, and students at the Hauptschule and Realschule schools can opt for a 3- year vocational or technical program at any of the vocational or technical schools known as Berufsschule andFachoberschule respectively. It is now possible for students with high academic achievement at the Realschule to switch to a Gymnasium on graduation.

Berufsschule are upper secondary vocational schools that prepare students for careers in a variety of fields including agriculture, food science, beauty therapy, business administration, printing technology, laboratory technology, textile, woodworking trades, metal trades, etc. The course is crafted in a way that allows the student to understand theories as well as practicalities of thesubjects. You could call it a dual training system that focuses on academics as well as application. These institutes also offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees after completing the vocational training.

Fachoberschule are upper secondary technical schools that prepare students for technical careers. Just like the Berufsschule, Fachoberschule schools also have tailored courses to help students gather academic knowledge as well as the application of that knowledge in the real world. These schools specialize in all types of technical career preparation courses from mechanical engineering to environmental technology.

2. Higher Education

This is followed by a bachelor’s degree comprising of 6 or 7 semesters. Post which students can pursue higher levels like mastersand PHDs. For a master’s degree, you need a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university, and you need to fulfill the language requirements depending upon your medium instruction for admission in a German university.

Indian students have four options before applying for a bachelor’s course in Germany:

  1. Complete 1 year of a relevant bachelor’s program in India post 12th grade
  2. Complete the 1-year preparatory course in Germany called Studienkolleg
  3. Clear JEE advanced examination in India
  4. Apply at universities that accept the Indian Diploma certificate (10+3)

Of the above four options, we suggest the 2 semester preparatory course (Studienkolleg) for two primary reasons, namely it introduces you to the German language and basics of the university degree, and it will give you exposure to the German culture and education system. This course paves the way for your new venture so that your transition from one culture to the other is smooth.

Allow us to give you a quick brief on the Studienkolleg if you are considering higher education in Germany after the 12th grade:

Studienkolleg is a two-semester preparatory course for prospective bachelor’s degree students with 12 years of schooling. It gives you an introduction to subjects like German, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Biology etc. It is divided into 4 courses namely, T-Kurs, M-Kurs, W-Kurs and G-Kurs, each with varying subjects depending on what career you are pursuing. All Studienkolleg courses include a decent number of hours dedicated to learning the German language. Students are required to complete the B1 or B2 level of the German language to secure admission in the Studienkolleg course. It is ideal for students to complete the B level of the German language. Studienkolleg is free of cost at Public Universities, and it will cost you anywhere between € 8,000 to € 10,000 at private institutes.

Once you have decided that Germany is the place for you, there is another important question to answer – which university is best suited for you? The higher education system in Germany is very uniquely divided into three types of universities, each catering to a different set of careers. Let’s take a closer look at each.

1. Universities & Technical University (TU) or Technische Hochschule (TH)

Let’s begin with the classic universities. These universities cover a range of subjects like social sciences, literature, humanities, mathematics and many more. These courses are academic in nature and impart theoretical knowledge to the students. You can find bachelor, masters and doctorate programmes here. Depending on your skills and what you want to major in, you can pick the university that is best known in that field. The best part is that you can choose your subjects and even your professors! You may want to major in history, and while you pick most of your subjects related to history, you can also pick a few that are, maybe, in technology, anthropology, law or economics. Although all universities offer a number of programmes across subjects that are excellent in quality, they may be well-known for a particular programme. For example, the University of Tübingen offers a variety of programmes but is best known for its English literature programme.

Additionally, being a country excelling in innovation and technology, there are many prestigious Technical Universities that are known for their technical courses in engineering, technology and IT. While they offer courses across fields, they are best known for their extraordinary faculty and premium facilities available in the technology department. They also offer excellent research partnerships and placements because of their wide network and alliances with numerous large and mid-sized organizations. Some of the top TUs are RWTH Aachen University, TU Berlin, TU Munich, University of Hannover, University of Stuttgart, KIT and TU Dresden. There is an alliance of 9 top Technical Universities of Germany called TU9. It comprises of RWTH Aachen University, Technische Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Technische Universität Dresden, Leibniz University Hannover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich, and University of Stuttgart. They enjoy an outstanding reputation around the world as renowned research and teaching institutions.

2. Universities of Applied Sciences or Hoschschule

These institutions focus on the practical side of the subject apart from the theory. While theoretical knowledge is imparted just like at the classic universities, these universities go one step ahead and give students a glimpse of how they are applied in the real world. Here, the programmes will have longer apprenticeships, summer projects, work projects and maybe even off-site projects that will either be in Germany or in another European countries. So, if you are looking at courses in medicine, business, engineering, social work, IT, etc. you should explore the universities of applied sciences. These universities have hand-crafted programmes that prepare students for the real world and are known for creating employees and employers of tomorrow.

3. Colleges of Art, Film and Music

This is for all you creative geniuses. As the name suggests, every field that is in the arts, is covered under these universities. You will find programmes in music, film making, choreography, cinematography, photography, VFX, graphic design, copywriters, fashion design, drama, the list is endless. The application process consists of an aptitude test that will assess your creative skills so if you want to apply to one of these programmes, keep practicing your art as much as you can before the enrolment processbegins.

Now, if you’re worried about the ranks of the universities, we assure you that none of the universities will disappoint you. You are guaranteed a quality-filled education at whichever university you enroll. All universities, private and public, have no lack of funds, which, in turn, allows them to invest in the latest equipment, state of the art facilities and excellent faculty, thereby guaranteeing you an eminent educational experience. There are at least 20 universities in Times Higher Education (THE) rankings 2020.

Since German universities work autonomously, and are some of the oldest in the world of education, employers look at them in high regard. German education is renowned world-wide, and so there are many large and mid-sized corporations that are associated with German universities for various research and innovation projects, and they also fund a number of these specific projects annually.

Once you have decided what you want to study and which university is aligned best with your career path, it’s pretty smooth sailing from there. The admission process is efficient, the student visa process is uncomplicated and before you know it, your European dream will be unfolding before you! We will dive deep into university education in upcoming blogs.

It’s always thrilling to learn a new language, isn’t it?

The thought of being able to communicate with a whole new set of people is very intriguing. Today, if you had to pick a new language to learn, it would most definitely be German. If we begin to look at Germany’s contribution to the world, we see that the country has excelled marvellously in all strata. There is a whole world within the world wide web that’s in German. There are over 15 million important websites that are in German, so it’s no surprise that knowing the language will open new avenues for you. The German online presence is the second largest, globally. With its cultural history being so rich, it’s no wonder that the German language is so renowned worldwide.

Are you motivated to get a foreign education or build a career in Germany? Let’s take a look at the various benefits that come with knowing the German language:

1. Foreign Students

If you’re in Germany on a student visa and hope to make a living there after you’ve earned your degree, it goes without saying that life will be much easier if you can speak the local language. Please remember that English may be paraded around as the global language, but it really isn’t. That is just an illusion. Majority of Germans will understand English, but it is not their first language or their preference. As a student, you will be visiting banks, supermarkets, train stations, bus stations, malls, restaurants, hospitals, calling a cab, talking to neighbours, reading official notices, etc. All these tasks, with some difficulty, can be done in English. But it will be a struggle. If you want the ease of living, it’s best to be able to understand and speak German.

2. Job Opportunities for Foreign Students

Even if you manage to get by as a student without learning German, there’s still the task of landing a job after completing your education. It’s not impossible, just difficult. Even if you do land a job, you’ll be like a fish out of water because everyone around you will be speaking German. If you know the language, your chances of getting a job scale up. You will be able to impress the interviewer, share a bond with fellow colleagues and put forth your ideas effectively. Knowing the language is especially important if you are in industries like media, advertising, entertainment, retail, etc where communication and brainstorming sessions are a vital part of the role.

3. Professional Growth

This is for everyone, living in Germany or not. It goes a long way to be prudent. German companies are partnering with numerous companies across the globe and are entering international waters. In India, we see companies like Siemens, Bayer, Bosch, Volkswagon, Allianz, etc expanding and creating several job opportunities. If you are employed with a German company or play a role as an external counterpart, you can build excellent professional relations if you know German. You can take it in your stride to ensure that you don’t stagnate professionally. Also, Berlin is the hub of innovation and start-ups. So, if you want to explore your entrepreneurial side, learning German should be your first step.

4. Science and Research

Now, unless you’ve been living under a rock your whole life, you will be aware that Germany has been making breakthrough after breakthrough in the world of science. It is the third largest contributor to scientific research and development. So, if your field of work has anything to do with science, research, medicine, etc, there is a high chance that, at some moment in life, you will have dealings with German professionals. You may go for a research study programme to Germany or you may be working on a common paper with them over digital platforms. Either way, you will come across as more approachable, and will have effective communication if you are able to speak their language.

While learning the language, you must know that there are three levels and 2 sub-levels within each level.

  • Level A1 and A2 are for beginners to comprehend and speak basic German. This level allows you to be proficient in simple conversations that involve personal details, family details and basic questions and phrases that will help you get by. You will understand basic German that is being spoken to you slowly.
  • The second level i.e B1 and B2 includes the pre-intermediate and intermediate courses. This level is ideal for students as it goes a step ahead in understanding and being able to speak. With this level, you will have a larger vocabulary, and will understand how to frame complex sentences. You can make yourself understood at university and work.
  • Finally, C1 and C2 is the advanced level that will allow you to master the language. This is required only by those who are looking at jobs that require you to speak, read and write German full-time – translators, government jobs, emergency services, etc.

Now IELTS from home!

Now IELTS from home!

Utilise the lockdown to prepare and take your IELTS.

IELTS, or the International English Language Testing System, is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test, for higher education and global migration. It is recognised by over 10,000 institutions and 10,000 organisations globally, and continues to set the standard for English language testing, in countries where English is the main language of communication. In fact, most governments across the world, use the IELTS to process immigration applications too.

Now that we have understood what the IELTS is and why it is important, let us get clarity on what it will cover. It is a task-based test covering the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. While Listening and Speaking matter are the same for both tests, there is a difference in the Reading and Writing sections.

In the current scenario of the Covid pandemic, and the country being in lockdown mode, there is good news for all students aspiring to study abroad. You can prepare from home by taking online classes, and get ready to take the IELTS Computer Based Examination! This will not only help you continue with your study abroad plans, it also allows you to utilise this time productively.

Taking online classes has many benefits, more so in a scenario where physical classes are not a possibility.

  1. They give you ample time and flexibility with your schedule. It is easier to work your other activities around online classes, since they do not require any travel time and minimal preparation.
  2. Neither do you incur any travel cost.
  3. Teachers are aware that online studying could be new to a lot of their students. As a result, they are happy to be more cooperative than usual, regarding any clarifications students need.
  4. A by-product of online classes, which will also work in your favour, is self-motivation. Since you will not physically be with your peers, but will instead be spending a lot of time by yourself, your course will help you become more self-motivated. This is a trait that will make you stand out in the workplace and even look good in your resume!

The advantages don’t stop here, but continue with taking computer-based exam. Computer based examination not only help save on time and resources, but also guarantee an exam slot at a time when paper exams could become difficult to take. In India majority of students prefer to take paper-based examination rather than computer base examination. Keep in mind, seats for the paper exam are rather limited and once the lockdown is over, centres are expecting a crowd of students to take the paper exam. So, there will be lots of students who might not get the opportunity to take the exam. Also, post lock down all centres are expected to run with limited capacity in post lockdown scenario. That will in turn, affect admission applications and your precious time could get wasted. On the other hand, a computer-based exam can be programmed for more applicants due to availability of more slots, as desired. Results of an IELTS computer based exam are available much sooner – in 5-7 days, vis-à-vis the 13-15 days it takes for paper exam IELTS results.

While the Listening, Reading and Writing tests will take place online in a rehearsed format, the Speaking test will remain face-to-face with an examiner – the most effective way of assessing. The tests are available up to 7 days a week, and 3 times daily. (In contrast, the paper-based exam is available up to 48 days per year, and only on Thursdays, and Saturdays).

Another general observation is that students tend to score a marginally better score in the Computer based test, in comparison to the paper exam. And in an exam that is important enough to shape your life, that marginally better score could just be your winning ticket!

In short, there is no reason to put a brake on your dreams of studying abroad! In fact, don’t let the lockdown interfere with your preparations. Instead, utilise this time to prepare. RG International is hosting live classes every day. You can choose between four slots, for the 60-90 minute lectures. There are expert mentors who are happy to engage in weekly doubt-solving sessions with their students too.
