Living Costs in Finland for Students
In Finland, just like in any other country, living in big cities like Helsinki can be expensive. However, costs are usually lower if you live outside these cities. Here’s a breakdown of average living costs to help students understand what to expect:
Accommodation: Living in student residence halls is cheaper, but only about 32% of international students can get a spot there. Many students choose to share apartments off-campus, which reduces costs.
If you rent a private apartment, expect to pay around 400 to 500 euros a month. However, if you share, the cost drops to about 350 to 450 euros. Students in residence halls usually pay around 380 euros monthly for accommodation.
Cost of Food in Finland: Food prices can vary quite a bit depending on where you are. Supermarkets offer affordable groceries, and you can expect to spend around 200 to 250 euros a month on groceries.
Eating out? A meal at a typical restaurant costs about 10 to 12 euros, while a three-course meal for two at a nice restaurant is around 60 euros.
Transportation and Other Living Costs in Finland: Transportation is generally cheaper for students living off-campus, with many (over 25%) walking to class regularly.
A monthly public transport pass costs between 35 and 50 euros. If you take taxis or private rentals, it can get much pricier—weekly costs can reach up to 230 euros. For social activities, setting aside about 100 euros a month is a good idea.
Lastly, students need to pay a student union fee of 100 euros when registering at Finnish universities
